Welcome to the ESEB 2027 Hub Congress jointly held in London, Gothenburg, Istanbul, and Munich – 16-20 August 2027

As scientists in the field of evolutionary biology, we are all too aware of the devastating effects of global climate change on ecosystems and human well-being. In response, the European Society for Evolutionary Biology (ESEB) pledges to serve as a role model for scientific societies. ESEB is taking on the challenge to reduce the environmental footprint of our scientific activities, while continuing to develop evolutionary biology and support exchanges, collaborations, learning opportunities and career developments for our community.

Therefore, we are delighted to invite you to attend the ESEB2027 Hub Congress. The spirit of the 2027 Congress is to promote sustainable local travel to the nearest Hub and demonstrate the real-life impact of this new meeting format. In the Hub Congress, you will have the opportunity to exchange and network with your colleagues in London, Istanbul, Gothenburg, and Munich during local oral and poster sessions. In addition, the cohesion of our community and the wide dissemination of ideas and advances will be ensured through shared, streamed keynote addresses and parallel sessions across 16 symposia that cover the breadth of evolutionary biology across biological and temporal scales. Through this combination of local and global sessions, we can offer more than 700 presentation slots.

We hope that you embrace the spirit of the Hub Congress and enjoy and contribute to the success of this new sustainable format in an open and respectful atmosphere that promotes fruitful scientific exchange.

We look forward to seeing you in London, Gothenburg, Istanbul, or Munich!

On behalf of the organizing committee,

Aurelien Tellier

Why a Hub Congress?

Research suggests that plane travel to and from ESEB events likely contributes >90% of their carbon emissions. Therefore, as a part of ESEB‘s pledge for climate-neutral congresses, the 2027 edition is, for the first time, a Hub Congress. By pioneering the organisation of a Hub congress, ESEB wishes to act as a role model amongst scientific societies. The goal is to establish ESEB as a scientific community that is proactive and innovative in its response to the climate crisis, and to inspire its members to be more mindful of the environmental impact of (academic) travel.

What is the ESEB 2027 Hub Congress?

ESEB 2027 Hub Congress is set to take place from 16th to 20th of August 2027 simultaneously across four locations: Munich (Germany), London (UK), Göteborg (Sweden) and Istanbul (Turkey) The four hubs will be interconnected during shared livestreamed sessions, local talks and poster sessions will also take place onsite at each location. The format aims to favour local participation and climate-friendly, shorter travel to the nearest hub.
